Am I normal? Leadership
I recently stumbled upon a thought-provoking question in a book at one of my favourite spots, The Ventnor Exchange on the Isle of Wight.
"Am I normal?" it asks, and while it may seem like a playful inquiry, it's a question that has resonated with many of my coaching clients over the years.
In the realm of leadership, the pressures and demands can often leave us questioning our own sense of normalcy. From working tirelessly to battling self-doubt about our roles as parents or partners, these challenges are more common than we might think.
But rest assured, you are normal. However, it doesn't have to be this way. Leading is both a privilege and a struggle, with expectations constantly on the rise. The influx of expert advice can be overwhelming, making it crucial to cut through the noise and prioritise your well-being.
This is where coaching plays a pivotal role. By focusing on your unique voice, thoughts, and expertise, coaching empowers you to make conscious decisions that benefit both you and those around you. It's about recognising that while you may be normal, your current lifestyle may not be sustainable or fulfilling.
Reflecting on the past year, I helped a director revamp their approach to leadership, leading to fewer work hours, increased productivity, and a renewed sense of self-worth. Life in leadership may not be flawless, but it can certainly be significantly improved.
So, the next time you find yourself pondering if you're normal, remember these steps:
1. Embrace your normalcy. Say "yes I am; I'm not alone".
2. Uncover the root of your doubts - Ask "What am I worrying about?"
3. Decide if you're ready for change - Ask "Am I willing to change this?"
And if you're seeking guidance on this journey, don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to support good people in leading great things.
