A Thriving Planet: The Vision

In my last work-related post, I discussed the idea of having a cause and how to choose one; where C.A.U.S.E stands for:

  • Conscience informed

  • Action orientated

  • (Have) underpinning values

  • Societally focused

  • Equitably framed

In this post, my cause of helping good people lead great things presents a vision: a thriving planet. Today, I will explore that vision in detail using the S.T.E.E.P.L.E framework — Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, and Ethical.

I envision a world transformed where people live in harmony with nature, communities are vibrant, and sustainable practices guide our actions. This requires individuals with influence and good intentions to come together.

I see a powerful network of leaders united by a shared cause: creating a thriving planet. By harnessing our collective strengths and insights, we can facilitate transformative change that resonates throughout our communities. This will be fuelled by innovative concepts like Doughnut Economics, emphasising the balance between societal needs and ecological sustainability, alongside the leadership principles found in works such as “Dare to Lead” and “Legacy” by James Kerr.

By collaborating under this common vision, we can inspire one another, share resources, and foster an environment of trust and accountability, enabling us to champion sustainable practices that genuinely make a difference. This shared commitment to a thriving planet will empower us to drive meaningful actions that benefit both people and the planet for generations to come.

My Role

As a coach, I believe my expertise lies in unlocking the potential of individuals and groups committed to making a positive impact in their sectors and communities. I focus on empowering good people to harness their unique strengths and perspectives, helping them articulate their visions for a thriving planet. By providing coaching and support, I assist them in developing their leadership skills while also helping them create a better work-life balance and sustainable beliefs.

My purpose is intertwined with the larger mission of creating transformative change in society. I see potential synergies between my coaching practice and broader goals of environmental stewardship and community empowerment. My aim is to foster connections that lead to innovative solutions.

By engaging with like-minded professionals, I envision a vibrant network where shared knowledge and experiences propel us towards a holistic approach to saving our planet. Ultimately, guiding individuals to become empowered leaders allows me to play a part in this crucial journey toward a thriving future.

Some Examples

I’m already proud to say I'm doing it as a coach, and here are some examples of leaders across various sectors who are stepping into advocacy roles to drive sustainable change.

The Chief Marketing Officer who has transitioned to become the ‘Chief Advocate’ and Director of ESG and Strategy within their organisation exemplifies this movement. This role empowers them to embed sustainability into the core strategy, ensuring that environmental, social, and governance principles are not just an afterthought but a guiding framework for business decisions. Their vision fosters a culture of responsibility, encouraging stakeholders to adopt practices that promote sustainability, ethical sourcing, and community engagement.

Meanwhile, the Chief People Officer is galvanising a network of their peers, creating a powerful coalition of CPOs dedicated to advancing the sustainability agenda. By collaborating and sharing best practices, they amplify initiatives that focus on employee engagement in corporate responsibility efforts and the integration of sustainable practices within human resources. This collective action is crucial for driving change at a systemic level, inspiring organisations to adopt fair-trade practices and prioritise ethical supply chains.

In the education sector, an inspirational educational leader is actively changing the narrative, influencing policy, and driving transformative change to help children thrive in an ever-evolving world. This leader focuses on curriculum reform and redefining the purpose of schools to develop students into critical thinkers and innovative idea generators. They support teachers and schools in utilising technology ethically, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary skills to navigate the future.

Moreover, a UK importer and wholesaler is making a significant impact in remote communities by prioritising fair-trade practices. Their commitment to ethical sourcing not only supports local economies but also ensures that producers receive fair compensation for their goods. By connecting consumers with these communities, they facilitate meaningful exchanges that enhance the social and economic well-being of individuals and families.

Additionally, a ‘marketing activist’ is evolving their business to become an essential partner for eco-conscious and climate-driven organisations, enabling them to effectively project their messages while further enhancing public awareness and engagement.

S.T.E.E.P.L.E Framework

A vision is more than just a statement; it illustrates what we will think, feel, hear, and see when we achieve our desired future. My vision for a "Thriving Planet" captures this essence, revealing a world characterised by vibrant communities, prosperous ecosystems, and social equity.

The S.T.E.E.P.L.E model serves as a comprehensive framework to understand the interplay of Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, and Ethical factors.

  • Social: Communities are vibrant and inclusive, characterised by diverse participation where individuals collaborate on common causes. Initiatives that focus on cultural celebration and mutual support strengthen social ties and foster unity.

  • Technological: Technology acts as a catalyst for positive change, driving innovations in renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture. The widespread adoption of such technologies ensures equitable access for all communities, helping them thrive.

  • Economic: Sustainable economic practices take precedence, with local circular economies minimising waste and maximising resources. Ethical businesses flourish, focusing on long-term benefits for both society and the environment, promoting new models of economic resilience.

  • Environmental: Natural environments thrive with robust ecosystems characterised by healthy landscapes, clean air and water, and biodiversity. Urban areas incorporate green spaces, enhancing public health and quality of life.

  • Political: Governance prioritises sustainability and encourages community involvement in decision-making. Policies support inclusivity and environmental protection while allowing local councils to work with global organisations towards actionable goals.

  • Legal: Laws promote justice, equity, and environmental protections that empower individuals and communities. A strong legal framework encourages proactive engagement by communities to advocate for their rights and the rights of the planet.

  • Ethical: Ethical practices shape organisational operations, emphasising transparency and accountability. Businesses promote fair labour practices and responsible sourcing, recognising that these values cultivate community trust and support long-term sustainability.

BeTheWaves.org: A Collaborative Force for Change

A key aspect of this vision is the role of individuals stepping up to drive transformative change. I envision building an organisation named BeTheWaves.org, composed of leaders and experts dedicated to fostering collaboration for a thriving planet.

BeTheWaves.org is not about replacing existing organisations; rather, it aims to unite diverse efforts into a collective force. By sharing best practices, resources, and innovative solutions, we can enhance our impact to create meaningful change.

This framework enables us to address global challenges more effectively, ensuring that our work is coordinated and leverages our collective strengths. The goal is to create an inclusive environment where organisations can connect and align their missions towards our common goal of a thriving planet.

As we promote collaboration, we aim to catalyse systemic shifts that tackle today’s challenges while fostering a sustainable future.
